Elbow punch

For the elbow punch both hands are used. Several points have to be kept in mind for the perfect elbow punch.

  • The guard position of both hands have to be maintained. In fact, how you use your elbow to punch and take it back determines this. You can maintain your guard position by keeping the fist of the punching hand close to the face, and also keeping the hand firmly bent. If you loosen the hand while punching most likely you will lose your guard position!
  • Twist from the torso. RIGHT HAND. This is very important. If using right hand, the foot swivels on the ball of the foot as you twist lightly but firmly from the waist.
  • Twist from the torso. LEFT HAND. If using left hand the left foot swivels again but more deeply from the ball of the foot as well as from the waist.
  • Extend the spine, reaching high (the target's side of the face) with the elbow. This is also important that the punch is not delivered low but from as high as you can.
  • You need to practice this extensively.Since this is a close punch you feel the power of it jolting you rather intensely. Most beginners will feel the entire head rattle when they deliver this punch well!! So, an elbow punch can be effective only when all these parts of the whole are taken completely into consideration.
