There are three positions from which you can utilise the thrust kick on the target's body. But will write on that later.
Here I want to emphasise how this same technique of kick-and-thrust may be used with your knee and your shin. For a thrust kick, you fold the leg, aim the part (ball of foot/knee/shin) of the body that are using and then sweep the leg out and then thrust hard. The power must come in the thrust. Do not jerk the body part fast back --ensure contact is made firmly. This is important. Beginners will jerk the leg back fast -- that comes from the fear that the target will grab the leg. But unless he is a trained fighter that reflex will be difficult. You must make maximum impact with the thrust, so hard as to jar him/her.
For this movement -- the thrust -- some key elements need to be learnt
- Form has to be perfect. The slight backward move, the full sweep of leg.
- The back leg's balance is very important. A beginner's fear of losing balance or being grabbed by the target comes when the back leg's balance is weak. A good fighter, even if his leg is grabbed, will never fall down but can stay upright on one leg!
- The last, but most important focus (once form is in place), has to be on developing power in your thrust. It should shove/push with firmness!
