How far or close to get to your target?

How far or close should you get to the target?

Beginners have a big problem with this.

Usually when u start Muay Thai practice, you will find that the excessive focus you give on your punching or kicking -- just plain co-ordination -- brings  you very close to your target. This is often difficult to control, for a beginner.  But learn to throw your punches from far. This is good for several reasons, not the least which keeps you far away from an opponent:) When you throw your punch from far, you also learn to twist your arm more, employ more power, use your hip strength etc.
Another thing is that this throwing the punch from far helps you with your footwork -- if you decide to stay away from your target than you gauge the distance and keep moving in front or back, as is necessary. This improves only when you keep your distance. When you are close, it usually means that you are moving in front fast, but not fast enough backwards. The backward footwork is very difficult, and needs to be diligently cultivated to be really effective. That is why, even as a beginner you must learn to throw your punch from far.

However, once you use the Self-defence moves in Muay Thai, where you can de-stabalise your target by shaking his balance, then you must be close to him -- this is important to land your kick/punch more effectively.

The trick is to use your arm or your leg or your torso to `throw' or dislodge your opponent, and then move in for the most effective kick or punch. This is ideal in a self-defence situation. This also requires regular practice, since the tackles are specific and you need to know whether to take your hand from outside the target or inside. Often in self-defence moves, you also find that your hands cross -- this too needs to be controlled only with practice.
