When to use the upper cut

Hi, sorry for this gap in posting fresh info... Have been busy, rushing from one class to another. But if you have been practising regularly, this tip may make sense to you..
  • Upper cut is usually used when u drive your targe/opponent into a corner. It is an extreme punch that way.
  • It is a close contact punch also -- because u are rather close to your target unlike a straight punch where you hit from wherever you are, by just moving your torso in front and swinging deep from the shoulder. In the upper cut you move into the target to deliver the punch.
  • Therefore you must remember not to swing your hand back while delivering it -- a big mistake that most beginners do. They swing from the elbow back, since that is their idea of packing a punch. However, since this is a close contact punch you must swing from where you are (WITHOUT taking your elbow back). This means you saved on precious seconds. It means you are quick. And since this is a close contact punch you have reached with power from where you are. You must remember that swinging from wherever you are is how an advanced fighter shows his strenghts.
